I decided to create a series of abstracts in September 2019 and I deliberately decided to use differently shaped canvases, simply because I had never tried them before. This is an oil colour diptych. When I made this set of hearts, I deliberately tried to steer away from red; I did not want to create Valentine’s hearts. However, the heart shape is as sweet as the sentiments we attached to the rose. I will let Rumi speak: “That which God said to the rose, and caused it to laugh in full-blown beauty, He said to my heart, and made it a hundred times more beautiful.”
Our hearts are intricate and often troubled, especially now that the pandemic had arrested our laughter to some extent. May we find the courage from above to see the beauty in the hearts of the people who surround us and may we be reminded of the precious hopes and dreams we carry inside our hearts for the world and for others.
It is easy to allow a heaviness to settle inside us. Charles Spurgeon said, “However weak we are, however poor, however little our faith, or however small our grace may be, our names are still written on His heart; nor shall we lose our share in Jesus’ love.”
Let us paint carefully on canvas hearts. Let our brushes not be darts.
