“Fruitful ideas” (Post 57)

Today I enjoyed the luxury of ordering fruit online, which the supermarket delivered to our quarantine facility. A friend and I were missing our apples and oranges. We get packaged meals but to be without fresh fruit is not a healthy situation (no “punnet” intended). I was so happy (a little "orange" I think) when our apples and citrus fruit arrived in the brown paper bags. I divided the “bounty” and sent my friend’s half to his room.

Whenever I go shopping and I look at the array of options we have, I feel like painting a still life there and then. The natural shapes and the colours are such tangible sources of inspiration. The best part about painting a still life that stages fruit, is that you get to eat the subject matter.

Let us consider a few facts about apples and oranges. Apparently, there are over 7 500 different apple tree varieties. Orange tree varieties can be counted easily; they can be divided into two classes, namely the bitter orange and the sweet orange.

George Bernard Shaw said, “If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange these apples then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas.” Let us give Frank Sinatra a chance too, he said, “Orange is the happiest colour.”

May you have a happy day and do not forget to exchange those ideas. I included a mixed media still life I made in 2008 to match the topic.
