As creatives we may often become a bit hesitant to start another big work; we know what awaits us. Why shall we not take a break from large time-consuming works and create a series of miniatures that may allow us opportunities for experimentation? We can easily make ten to twenty miniatures in a day (depending on the chosen style and approach). Once we have created these little pieces, hope will return and then we can tackle big works again with gusto. When we see the “collection” which emerged within the course of a day, we will be flooded with possibilities and hope.
These smaller works use much less paint or other material and they make lovely little gifts – if we can’t find buyers. Our framing friends usually have left over frame lengths that are perfect for framing smaller works – if we want to see them framed. (We may even keep them on standby as Christmas presents.) Sometimes we simply have to think small – that is all. Enjoy the day with its “small” possibilities. I include a pair of miniatures I made in 2002. It is an oil on board diptych.
