More than a decade ago (2007 to be exact), a gallery asked me to make a large abstract painting. They did not give me any indication of the colour scheme they preferred. I created the work which I included here. I used layers of oil colours (diluted with “liquin medium”) and many rolls of masking tape to create this effect. I cannot recall why I decided to use these orange tones and what exactly I had in mind with this “spiritual” effect. Someone liked it very much, almost immediately; the gallery spokesperson told me it was sold to a buyer whose house apparently had a very high ceiling and they needed “something” at a strategic (high) spot to complete the interior.
The work as a whole reminds me of a heavenly dimension. When I was creating it, I remember thinking that this is taking much longer than what I had planned. It took about a month to reach completion, due to the layers that had to dry before I could add another. I do remember vaguely that I wanted to create a sense of "impact with softness" - if that is possible.
The reason why I decided to write about the “angel in the room” today is because of a YouTube video I watched last night about the presence of angels which are sent by God to protect His children. I will provide a link to the video I watched below, because whatever I say further may sound “contrived”. I was comforted by the fact that even though I may not be aware of the angels, they are around us and they are real. May you be comforted by the fact that we have guardian angels, if you are a believer.
One verse that immediately came to my mind is, Hebrews 13:2. “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.” (NIV)
(Please watch the video and come to your own conclusion. I was encouraged. Perhaps I simply need all the help I can get.)
